All exams will be administered (proctored) by Prometric. Review Prometric’s information on preparing for exam day.
Identification
For both in-person and remote testing, you must bring at least one piece of original, government-issued identification (ID) to your appointment.
To confirm your identity, your ID must:
- Be valid (not expired)
- Show your name, date of birth, photo, and signature
- Be issued by a government authority (federal, provincial, territorial, state, or the equivalent in another country)
- Be in Latin characters
If one ID document does not include all the required details, you may provide more than one. The documents must share at least one piece of identifying information, such as your name, so that we can confirm they belong to you.
For in-person testing at a test centre
In-person testing (“Test Center Exam”) is available at Prometric locations across Canada.
- Review Prometric Test Centre Policies and Test Centre Procedures for arrival and check-in procedures, proctor and testing room procedures, and end-of-test procedures.
- On exam day, arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures.
- If you arrive late, you may be refused admission and forfeit your exam fee.
- You will be issued a yellow key tag that allows locker access for food, medicine, or drinks during scheduled breaks.
- You are responsible for your own transportation and parking when testing in person.
- If you write your exam in Québec, exams will be proctored in French.
If you are found to be in violation of exam security policies during or after test day, your exam attempt will be voided and may result in cancellation of your application.
For remote testing
Remotely proctored testing (“Remote Exam”) is available at a location of your choice within Canada, subject to meeting strict technical and environmental requirements. Exams are administered through Prometric ProProctor.
You are responsible for ensuring your own equipment and internet connection meet all requirements for remote testing.
- Review the Prometric Remote Exam Experience page for information on taking the exam remotely using ProProctor. In order to write the exam remotely, you must meet strict requirements for:
- Computer system requirements, including screen resolution, operating system, webcam, microphone, and internet download/upload speeds
- Remote testing environment, including the nature of the location and what is allowed in your testing location
- Stable internet connection
- Security processes
- Review the ProProctor User Guide. Your exam will be proctored through ProProctor Live.
- Check your system requirements before exam day. Be sure to perform the system check on the same computer you will use for the exam. Please note that VPNs, firewalls, and anti-virus software can prevent you from launching a ProProctor exam.
- If you plan to write from a work computer or a work network, ensure that ProProctor requirements are not blocked from this location.
- On exam day, check in at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures.
- If you arrive late, you may be refused admission and forfeit your exam fee.
- If you plan to write your exam in French, please request a French-speaking proctor when you apply for exam registration.
If you are found to be in violation of exam security policies during or after test day, your exam attempt will be voided and may result in cancellation of your application.
Exam aids
A note pad will be provided for note-taking during the exam. In-person test-takers will receive a noteboard that must be returned to the proctor at the end of the exam. Remote test-takers will have access to a digital notepad within the exam interface.
Calculators are not permitted during the exam. Some questions may require simple mathematics such as ratios or percentages, which candidates should be able to complete without a calculator.
Exam time and breaks
Each field-of-practice exam is 60 minutes long, except for Cytology, which is 120 minutes. If you are writing multiple fields-of-practice exams in a bundle (single exam sitting), you will get a break in between each field-of-practice exam.
You will get a 15-minute break after every 60 minutes of testing.
- If you finish a field-of-practice exam or section early, you can go to your break sooner.
- If you are only writing one field-of-practice exam, finishing early will end your exam.
- You can also end your break early and move on immediately to the next field-of-practice exam or section.
Security checks apply every time you leave during your exam and return.
- In-person testing: If you leave the exam room (e.g., during a break), you must pass through security checks before continuing.
- Remote testing: If you leave your testing area, you’ll also have to complete security checks before you are allowed back into the exam.
If you take an unscheduled break for emergency reasons, your exam timer will continue running while you are away. The time you are away will be counted against your total exam time, and you will need to complete security checks before resuming your exam.
