If gaps are identified in an applicant’s field-of-practice competencies, CAMLPR requires the applicant to complete an Education Plan before writing the corresponding field-of-practice exam. This educational support helps ensure practitioners meet Canadian practice standards before entering the profession.
What is an Education Plan?
An Education Plan is an individualized program of study designed to help applicants address gaps that have been identified in their entry-level fields-of-practice competencies. The plan is based on the outcomes of a prior learning assessment and may include the completion of:
- Field-of-practice bridging courses
- CAMLPR-approved Canadian medical laboratory technology/science programs
CAMLPR has partnered with the Michener Institute of Education at UHN to offer bridging courses in each field of practice. These programs offer both theoretical instruction and clinical practice opportunities to prepare applicants for successful entry into regulated MLT practice in Canada.
Who needs to complete an Education Plan?
An education plan is required if you have educational gaps identified during your prior learning assessment. Please review: Will I need to complete an Education Plan before I can write an exam?
How can I access my Education Plan?
If you require an Education Plan before writing a CAMLPR field-of-practice exam, CAMLPR will notify you of the requirements, including any required bridging courses. CAMLPR must approve your bridging course enrollment before you can register.
Education Plan timeline
You must complete your Education Plan within 24 months of the date that your Prior Learning Assessment report is issued.
In exceptional cases, you may apply for a one-time 12-month extension per field of practice. Extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis for extraordinary circumstances that prevents Education Plan completion. Circumstances such as workload, stress, or scheduling conflicts are not considered grounds for extension.Your extension request must be submitted before your education plan expiry date.
If your Education Plan expires without completion and no extension has been granted, you will be required to submit a new Prior Learning Assessment application and pay the applicable fees. A new PLA may identify additional educational requirements.
