What is the Professional Practice Orientation?
The Professional Practice Orientation is a mandatory, self-paced, online course that introduces Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) to the ethical, regulatory, and professional responsibilities required for practice in Canada. This orientation prepares applicants to:
- Understand the regulatory framework and professional standards that govern MLT practice in Canada
- Learn about professional responsibilities, ethical considerations, and legal requirements
- Become familiar with quality assurance, safety protocols, and infection control standards
- Develop knowledge of human rights norms, workplace culture, and professional boundaries
- Practice patient-centered care principles and effective communication strategies
- Understand documentation, record-keeping, and legal compliance requirements
This orientation will help you meet the high standards expected of MLTs in Canada.
Who must complete the Professional Practice Orientation?
All applicants who have been approved to write the CAMLPR Field(s)-of-Practice Competency Assessments (Examinations) must complete the Professional Practice Orientation as part of the Flexible Pathways process. The Professional Practice Orientation must be completed before applying to the provincial regulator for registration in the province where you plan to work.
How can I access the Professional Practice Orientation?
You will receive access to the Professional Practice Orientation after registering for the CAMLPR Field(s)-of-Practice Competency Assessments (Examinations). Once CAMLPR approves your exam registration, you can access the Professional Practice Orientation in the Flexible Pathways application portal.
You will need to complete the orientation before you apply to the provincial regulator for registration in the province where you plan to work. You can complete the orientation before or after you write your exam(s).
