After successfully completing the CAMLPR Flexible Pathways process, the next step is to apply for provincial registration. In most provinces, Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) must be registered with a regulatory body before they can begin working.
Medical Laboratory Technologists are Regulated
An individual must register with a regulatory college in the jurisdictions in which registration is a legal requirement to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
Only individuals registered with a provincial regulatory college may use the protected title of “Medical Laboratory Technologist”.
Registration confirms that you have met the required standards and have the knowledge, skills, and judgment needed to provide safe and ethical care.
What CAMLPR Sends to the Regulator
If you plan to register to practice in one of the following jurisdictions, CAMLPR will share your case file (Prior Learning Assessment file and Fields-of-Practice exam report) directly with the applicable provincial regulator:
- Manitoba: College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM)
- Newfoundland and Labrador: Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP)
- New Brunswick: New Brunswick Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NBSMLT)
- Nova Scotia: Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT)
- Ontario: College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
- Prince Edward Island: College of Allied Health Professionals of Prince Edward Island (CAHPPEI)
- Saskatchewan: College of Medical Laboratory Professionals of Saskatchewan (CMLPSK)
Your case file is shared the regulator when you apply for exam registration in the CAMLPR applicant portal.
Registration Requirements and Timelines
While the overall process is similar, each province has its own registration requirements and timelines. You will need to:
- Submit an application to the provincial regulator after you have successfully completed the Flexible Pathways process
- Provide any additional documents or verifications they require
- Renew your registration annually (including proof of continuing competence)
“Fit and Proper Person” Requirements for Medical Laboratory Technologists
To work as a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Canada, you must be considered a “fit and proper person”. This requirement helps ensure all MLTs are qualified, ethical, and able to practice safely.
Moving Between Provinces
If you move to another province, you must apply for registration with that province’s regulatory body.
All provinces participate in the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA), which allows MLTs to transfer their registration between provinces more easily.
Working in British Columbia, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut
If you plan to work in British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, or Nunavut, you will be required to successfully complete the CAMLPR Fields-of-Practice Competency Exams once they come into effect.
