“Fit and Proper Person” Requirements for Medical Laboratory Technologists
To work as a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Canada, you must be considered a “fit and proper person”. This requirement helps ensure all MLTs are qualified, ethical, and able to practice safely.
When assessing whether you meet the “fit and proper person” requirements, regulators will consider whether you:
- Have the qualifications, competence, skills, and experience necessary to work as an MLT
- Have met all fields-of-practice examination requirements
- Have a legal or professional history that the regulator determines could affect your ability to practice safely or serve the public interest. This may include:
- Criminal arrests, charges, convictions, or guilty pleas
- Investigations, inquiries, suspensions, disciplinary actions, or revocation of any professional registrations, licenses, or certification
- Investigations or inquiries related to dishonest or unethical behaviour, or of failure to adhere to professional standards.
- Have fitness to practice as an MLT
The decision about whether you meet the “fit and proper person” requirement will be made by the regulatory body in the province where you plan to register as an MLT. Each regulator may interpret and apply this requirement independently, based on its own legislation and policies.
This information is provided to support applicant understanding and transparency. It does not replace or change the legal responsibilities of provincial regulatory bodies.
If you have questions or concerns about meeting these requirements, you should contact your provincial regulatory body for guidance before starting your application for the CAMLPR Flexible Pathways process.
