If you are in one of the following categories:
- International MLT Education: You completed a medical laboratory technology/science program outside of Canada.
- Non-Traditional Education: You completed a related program (e.g., BSc, MSc, PhD) related to medical laboratory technology/science.
- Canadian MLT Education (over 24 months ago): You did not attempt your first national MLT exam within 24 months of your program completion date.
Your Flexible Pathways process will include the following steps:
- Create a Flexible Pathways applicant account
- Complete the Self-Administered Readiness Assessment for the fields of practice you intend to work in
- Undergo a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) for those fields of practice. This includes meeting language proficiency requirements.
- Complete an Education Plan if required as a result of your PLA
- Write the Fields-of-Practice exams you are eligible for
- Complete the Professional Practice Orientation
- Apply for registration with the provincial regulator
Your education, clinical training, work experience, and language proficiency will be assessed through the PLA to determine whether they align with Canadian standards. The PLA evaluates the depth and currency of your preparation, including academic coursework and hands-on laboratory experience.

As of this date, all internationally educated MLTs and those with non-traditional education who plan to work in participating jurisdictions must write the CAMLPR Field-of-Practice Exams.
