Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) are regulated health professionals in Canada. To practice as an MLT in most provinces, individuals must be registered with their provincial regulatory body. These regulatory bodies establish and enforce standards of practice, requiring that all MLTs meet the necessary qualifications and competencies for safe and effective practice.
The Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) represents provincial regulatory bodies for MLTs in Canada. CAMLPR’s role is to establish standards for the knowledge, skills, and judgment in the practice of medical laboratory technology, focusing on fair, efficient, effective, ethical, transparent, and inclusive regulatory approaches across Canada.
Regulation occurs at the provincial level through member organizations of CAMLPR, which CAMLPR is accountable to. These regulatory bodies have both the duty and the authority, under legislation, to prescribe the qualifications, standards, competencies, and other requirements for MLTs to be eligible to practice in regulated jurisdictions.
This regulatory framework helps safeguard public interest by requiring that all practicing MLTs maintain high standards of professionalism and competence.
